Avaya Signs Pact with U.S. Soccer, 'Rings In' the Agreement at NYSE
NEW YORK (Tuesday, February 19, 2002) – Avaya (NYSE: AV), a leading global provider of voice and data networks to businesses and an official sponsor for the 2002 FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA Women's World Cup 2003 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ tournaments, today announced that it is broadening its comprehensive support for soccer through a new sponsorship and technology agreement with the U.S. Soccer Federation – the governing body for the sport in the United States. To mark the occasion, Don Peterson, chairman and CEO, Avaya, joined U.S. Men’s World Cup team star Cobi Jones, U.S. Women’s World Cup star Brandi Chastain, and Dan Flynn, secretary general, U.S. Soccer Federation, at the New York Stock Exchange today to ring the opening bell.
Under the terms of the three-year agreement, Avaya will become a sponsor and “Official Provider of Voice and Data Communications” for the Federation. The company joins an elite group of companies in support of the U.S. teams, including: Anheuser-Busch, Chevrolet, Gatorade, Havoline, Hershey, Lego Systems Inc., Nike and Phillips Electronics.
In addition, Avaya has agreed to help the Federation raise funds for the sport's first U.S. National Training Center and is serving as title sponsor for a U.S. Soccer Foundation Benefit Dinner to be held later today in Washington, D.C. Avaya will provide the communications infrastructure for the state-of-the-art facility, to be built in California. Avaya’s Services division will manage the installation and on-going maintenance of the communications network.
Avaya began its involvement with soccer as a sponsor of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup™, to be held from May 31 through June 30 in Korea and Japan. As the FIFA World Cup's™ first “Official Convergence Communication Provider,” Avaya is providing one of the world's largest voice and data networks for use by FIFA officials, referees, journalists, athletes, volunteers and other participants at the games.
The Avaya network represents a number of “firsts” for FIFA. It marks the first time that FIFA is using voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology at an event. It's also the first time a communications network will support simultaneous FIFA World Cup matches in two countries, providing more than 120,000 connections among 20 stadiums, two international media centers and two FIFA remote headquarters locations.
Like the FIFA network, the communications infrastructure for the new U.S. training center will feature Avaya’s Enterprise-Class IP Solutions (ECLIPS) portfolio, a family of systems that delivers the efficiency and cost savings of converged voice and data communications.
