Thornton, Hejduk to Replace Keller, Sanneh on National Team Roster for NIKE U.S. Cup '99
CHICAGO (Thursday, March 4, 1999) - Goalkeeper Zach Thornton and midfielder Frankie Hejduk have been added to the U.S. National Team roster for Nike U.S. Cup '99 and will replace Kasey Keller (remaining with English club) and Tony Sanneh (injured quadricep), respectively. The National Team will begin training on Sunday (March 7) for Nike U.S. Cup '99, a four-team tournament which includes the USA, Mexico, Guatemala and Bolivia.
"It's unfortunate that we will not have Kasey in camp once again," said U.S. head coach Bruce Arena. "But this is another good opportunity for Zach Thornton, who has already demonstrated that he deserves opportunities with the national team."
Keller's Leicester City club is on the verge of one of its most important matches of the year, and will play Tottenham Hotspurs on March 21 at Wembley Stadium in the Worthington League Cup Final. Leicester is trying to become just the fourth team in the 39-year history of the League Cup to win the title three times. Though this match will not directly interfere with Nike U.S. Cup '99, Leicester will play an imortant Premier League game and Worthington Cup tuneup versus Charlton Athletic on March 13.
Thornton, who posted several key saves in shutting out Chile during the first half of the USA's 2-1 victory on Feb. 21, will replace Keller on the U.S. roster and be joined by goalkeeper Tony Meola.
In addition to the loss of Keller, midfielder Tony Sanneh has been dropped from the USA's Nike U.S. Cup '99 roster after suffering a quadricep injury. Sanneh's roster spot will be filled by Frankie Hejduk, another German-based midfielder.
Hejduk, a Southern California native, will not join the U.S. squad in Los Angeles until after the weekend, as he is scheduled to be in the squad for Bayer Leverkusen's Bundesliga match on Sunday (March 7) versus Werder Bremen.
The U.S. National Team will open Nike U.S. Cup '99 against first-time participant Guatemala at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. (PT) in a match televised live on ESPN, with Bolivia facing off against Mexico in the second match at 8 p.m. (PT).
The U.S. squad will then face two-time defending U.S. Cup champion Mexico at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., at 12:30 p.m. (PT) live on ABC. The second part of the doubleheader pits Bolivia against Guatemala at 3 p.m. (PT).
