Development Academy Weekend Wrap-up (March 4, 2008)

CHICAGO (March 4, 2008) -- In U-17/18 action, FC DELCO traveled to Maryland, taking on Potomac SC in a back-and-forth battle, and coming away with a 2-1 victory behind a brace from Matthew Margiotta.

"The boys finally tonight realized their true identity. In the first half we saw the last gasp of our identity as a U17 squad.” Bryan Davis, head coach of Potomac SC said. “In the 2nd half we finally found our voice as a U18 Academy Team. I greatly anticipate our next game to keep that vibe going.”

Margiotta opened the scoring for DELCO in the 25th minute, after high pressure from David Cassenelli forced a turnover in Potomac’s defensive end. Cassanelli gained possession in the penalty area and slotted the ball for Margiotta, who took a one-time shot that deflected off a Potomac defender and into the goal.

Second-half substitute Nikhil Gregg made his fresh legs pay off, intercepting a pass at midfield and carrying the ball to the top of the box. Gregg slotted a ball into the stride of an on-rushing Margiotta, whose one-time finish beat Potomac ‘keeper Kerman Schloss to the far post.

Potomac finally broke through the DELCO in the 70th minute, when Streilein took a free kick that DELCO failed to clear, and Potomac’s Ifiok Akpandak took advantage of the loose ball, cutting DELCO’s lead to one.

Matias Alvez scored two goals, and Joseph Chang added one as Schulz Academy topped Scott Gallagher, 3-1, in the teams’ Under-15/16 match.

"It was a tough and heavily contested game,” said Schulz coach Dr. Josef Schulz. “Our opponent was very well organized, and had probably more of the ball than we had. But I think the individual quality of some of our players made the difference in this game.”

Alvez opened the game’s scoring in the 20th minute, with Hasani Sinclair picking up the assist. Scott Gallagher, who had the better of the possession in the game, leveled the score in the 32nd minute.

Schulz regained the lead in the 72nd minute, when Alvez earned a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box, and calmly scored from the spot. Chang came into his first Development Academy game late in the second half and added a goal in the 79th minute to make the final score 3-1.
