U.S. Under-17 WNT Defeats Germany 2-0 To Win 2010 U-16 Nordic Cup in Denmark
HILLEROD, Denmark (July 10, 2010) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team, consisting of players born in 1994 and 1995, won the 2010 U-16 Nordic Cup with a 2-0 victory over Germany in the championship game. It was the first time the USA has attended this tournament at this age level, which featured teams of 94s and 95s.
The USA earned its berth in a championship game by winning Group B with a 2-1 victory over Norway, a 3-0 triumph over Denmark and a 6-0 romp past the Netherlands.
The USA opened the scoring in the 34th minute after German goalkeeper Meike Kemper blocked a penalty kick taken by Lindsey Horan but Stephanie Amack showed savvy and quickness to follow up the shot with a chance of her own. That shot was also blocked, but Amack finally stuffed home the second rebound from six yards out.
The USA sealed the match, in which it doubled the Germans on shots, in the 66th minute after Summer Green crossed a ball into the left side of the penalty box. Horan back-heeled the ball just out of reach of the out-stretched Kamper to Kodi Lavrusky and the U.S. forward knocked her shot into the net from two yards out.
“Denmark hosted a great tournament with some outstanding teams,” said U.S. head coach Mike Dickey. “The USA played very well throughout the competition, but saved its best soccer for the final. Every player played an important role during this week and it was a great team performance.”
Kate Rowland went the entire game in goal for the USA to get the shutout. The tournament consisted of 80-minute games.
