U.S. head coach JILL ELLIS

On Sydney Leroux, who scored three goals against Switzerland:
“Syd is a goal scorer. I thought she got a lot of help from her teammates, but I thought she mixed up her runs well and her movement was very good today and she got rewarded with some great finishes.”

On the big victory:
“It was huge. Yesterday we had a very good day. We have some good meetings and talked about the fact that this team has a lot of talent, we just needed to catch fire. To score five is tremendous and it was a good emotional boost.”

On the match:
“It’s exactly what the team needed to build some confidence and generate some momentum in this tournament. We knew we had to get a result today and we focused on the first 45 minutes being essential, so to be 3-0 up at halftime was kind of a dream start, but we also played very well and I was excited by some of the soccer we played out there today.”

On the second half and looking forward to the Korea Republic:
“We wanted to focus on possession and trying to keep the ball and run the clock a little bit, but I was pleased with the two more goals. As far as playing South Korea, we want to build on this momentum and we don’t want to take our foot off the gas. We want to get a good result and build confidence for the next round.”

U.S. midfielder ZAKIYA BYWATERS

On rebounding from the tie to get the big win:
“I’m confident in our team. We just have to listen to our coaches and execute our game plan. We have the talent, we just have to play as a team and play with heart.”

On her goal:
“Kristie had the ball in the midfield and she was penetrating down the middle. I saw some space in between the defense so I was yelling for the ball. I just ran past my player and placed it in the far post.”

On the match:
“In the first game, we didn’t possess the ball as well as we could have. We didn’t really combine and we didn’t finish our scoring opportunities. This game really showed that we are capable of scoring goals and that’s the way we want to play.”

U.S. captain CHRISTINE NAIRN

On the match:
“I think this game we had something to prove and wanted to make a statement. We needed the three points and Kristie, Syd and Z had some great goals.”

On the match:
“I think we defended really well. We concentrated on keeping the game in front of us and finding the width when we did get the ball and I think we really executed what (our coaches) told us to do.”

On the upcoming Korea Republic match:
“It’s always a goal of ours to win and the way we won definitely gave us some confidence. It’s a goal to come first out of our bracket, so we are going to try to come out and win the game against South Korea. Our next goal is to win the bracket. Korea is a great team, but we are hoping to get three points out of it. It’s one game at a time and we’ll go from there.”

U.S. forward KRISTIE MEWIS

On the match:
“We’re very excited about this one. We were a little off in our first game and we didn’t really play to our full potential. In this game, we stepped it up and came out hard in the first half and continued it on through the game so we are really happy with the result.”

U.S. forward SYDNEY LEROUX

On the match:
“Our team is so much more composed. We were ready to go. We went after it today and I’m proud of everyone.”

On the match:
“Our confidence is back up now. We lost it a little in the Ghana game especially when were down 1-0 in the first minutes. Ghana reminded us what we are playing for.”

On Kristie Mewis’ early goal:
“It was super important. It gave us momentum. We know that getting scored on early is a little tough to come back from.”
