GENK ,Belgium (Aug. 6, 2005) - The U.S. Under-17 '88 Men's National Team drew 1-1 with the KRC Genk U-19s this afternoon in their third game of their Netherlands tour. The match was played across the border in Belgium at the club's training facility.
The U.S. fell behind just before halftime as the Belgium club was able to beat 'keeper Diego Restrepo in the 43rd minute.
In the 78th minute, the U.S. found the equalizer as second half substitute Quavas Kirk found Omar Gonzalez open in the box and the 6-foot-4 striker buried his shot into the net.
The U.S. will next face Ajax on Monday, Aug. 8, which will be their fourth and final match in the Netherlands.
The U.S. is a little over a month away from competing in the 2005 FIFA Under-17 World Championship, which will take place from Sept. 16-Oct. 2 in Peru. The U.S. was drawn in to Group C with North Korea, Italy and Ivory Coast.
The U.S. opens against North Korea (Korea DPR) on Sept. 17 at 12:45 p.m. CT, before facing Italy on Sept. 20 (3:30 p.m. CT) and concludes group play on Sept. 23 (3:30 p.m. CT) against Ivory Coast. The U.S. will play their first two group matches against North Korea and Italy at Elias Aguirre Stadium in Chiclayo, before moving to Lima to face Ivory Coast in their third and final group match at Nacional Stadium. The majority of the matches during the FIFA U-17 World Championship will be played on artificial turf, similar to the tournament two years ago in Finland.
