U-23 WNT Draw and Win over W-League Sides

CARSON, Calif. (June 16, 2008) - The U.S. U-23 Women's National Team played two matches in its final training camp before the 2008 Nordic Cup, drawing 0-0 with the Pali Blues, a team that is undefeated in W-League play and features numerous current and former full and youth National Team players while downing the Ventura Fusion by a 3-1 score.

In the training camp that ran from June 5-12 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., the U.S. met the Fusion on June 9 with Kerri Hanks opening the scoring in the 20th minute in a game that saw the U.S. pile up a 26-6 shot margin. After giving up an equalizer in the 52nd minute, the U.S. struck back quickly, getting the winning goal from Allison Mallams in the 55th and clincher from Amy Smerdzinski four minutes from the end of the match match.

On June 11, the U.S. out-shot a talented Blues side 10-8, but couldn’t find the net. Val Henderson picked up the shutout in goal for the U-23s. U.S. head coach Bill Irwin will now make his final selections to choose an 18-player roster for the Nordic Cup, taking place from July 15-21 in Sweden. The U.S. will face Switzerland (July 15), England (July 17) and Norway (July 19) in first round play. The other group features Sweden, Finland, Germany and Scotland. The winners of the two groups will play for the championship on July 21.

The U.S. has had great success at the Nordic Cup, which pits the U.S. against Europe’s top teams, having won seven of the past nine tournaments.
