Under-17 MNT Stays Unbeaten in South America with Win in Copa Cuidad de Rosario

ROSARIO, Argentina (July 9, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team, with an entirely different starting lineup than the one that defeated Uruguay on July 4, topped regional side A.R.F. at the Copa Cuidad de Rosario in Argentina. Forward Rob Derschang had a goal and two assists, while Spencer Richey was stellar in goal in the first half before giving way to Samir Badr.

A pair of quick goals from Rob Derschang and Victor Pineda got the U.S. out to a 2-0 lead with just eight minutes gone. Four minutes into the game, Soony Saad received a throw-in on the right flank and played the ball across for Derschang, who got a head to it and put the ball past A.R.F. goalkeeper Petrich Lucas.

Minutes later, Derschang was back on the attack, playing the ball across the goal from the left. George Malki's shot attempt was mostly missed, but he deflected the ball just enough for it to sneak over to Pineda, who knocked it off a defender and into the net, giving the U.S. a 2-0 lead in the eighth minute.

Derschang also set up the third goal late in the game. The Englewood, Colo. native sent a through-ball for Jaime Gutierrez. Gutierrez did the rest, cutting into the middle of the field and firing his shot low and into the corner for a 3-0 lead.

The lone goal of the game for A.R.F. came in stoppage time, when an attacker went down in the box, and the referee awarded a penalty kick. Cabrera converted from the spot, but the U.S. held onto its two-goal lead.

The U.S. will take on host Argentina on Thursday, July 10, before rounding out the Copa Cuidad de Rosario against Chile on Friday, July 11.
