U.S. Women's National Team to Play Brazil in Send-Off Match; Nike Road to Glory Finale Will be Last Match Before Olympics
CHICAGO (Wednesday, June 14, 2000) - The U.S. Women's National Team will play Brazil on Sept. 1, 2000, at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif. in its final match before departing for Australia and the 2000 Olympics. The game will be the third of three matches on the "NIKE Road to Glory" as the defending Olympic and Women's World Cup champions finish up their final preparations before heading Down Under.
Sponsored by Chevrolet, the "send-off" match against Brazil will once again pair the two 1999 Women's World Cup semifinalists in a San Jose/Bay Area clash. The two teams squared off in front of 74,000 fans at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on July 4, 1999, with the USA winning, 2-0. The match will no doubt be a rousing send-off for both teams as it will feature two of the world's most dynamic attacking sides at the top of their games with Olympic openers just two weeks away.
The match will be part of a doubleheader with the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS, who will be playing their regular season finale against the Columbus Crew. The USA-Brazil game, which will be televised live on ESPN, kicks off at 6 p.m. PT and will be followed by the Earthquakes-Crew match at 8:30 p.m. PT. The MLS match was changed from its original date of September 2.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Saturday, June 24, at 10 a.m. and can be purchased by calling (408) 985-GOAL. Ticket prices for the doubleheader are $70 for Epicenter, $55 for Core, $45 for Shaker and $30 for Rumble seats. Group tickets (20 or more) are $25 for Shaker and $15 for Rumble seats.
The "NIKE Road to Glory" will open on August 13 with a match against Russia at the Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. (Kickoff 5 p.m. ET -- LIVE on ESPN2). The USA will then face Canada at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. on Sunday, Aug. 20 (Kickoff 2 p.m. CT -- LIVE in ESPN2). Tickets are priced at $15-$45 and are available by calling 816/920-9300.
The "NIKE Road to Glory" will complete an unprecedented schedule of 32 matches in 2000 before the Olympics. Spartan Stadium has proved an exciting venue for the U.S. women, who have played there twice, defeating England, 5-0, in front of 17,358 fans in 1997 and Argentina, 7-0, in front of 14,608 in 1998. Spartan Stadium also was a highly successful venue for the 1999 Women's World Cup, hosting four matches including two quarterfinal contests, as well as the first-ever FIFA Women's World All-Star Match and Final Draw prior to the tournament.
