Record Number of Coaches Attend Coaching Symposium in Ohio
CHICAGO (Friday, March 15, 2002) - As part of the continued effort to educate coaches and to keep coaches current with the latest national and international developments in the sport, the Ohio South Youth Soccer Association hosted the annual Region II Coaching Symposium from March 1-3 at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Region II Coaching Symposium has been held annually at Bowling Green University since 1997, and the attendance spiked to an all-time high this year, with 236 coaches attending the three-day symposium.
"Attacking Play" was the theme at the symposium, in which Janet Rayfield, U.S. Soccer’s Region II Women’s National Staff Coach, and Carlos Menjivar, U.S. Soccer’s Region II Men’s National Staff Coach attended and presented.
“I was thrilled with the symposium this year,” said Jim Martella, Executive Director of Ohio South Youth Soccer Association. “It was the best attendance we have ever had, and I could not have been happier with the enthusiasm and participation we received from the coaches.”
The coaches in attendance included Directors of Coaching, state team coaches, district team coaches and select club coaches. Sixty-eight ‘A’ licensed coaches used the symposium to earn two CEUs (coaching education units) toward the renewal of their ‘A’ license.
The symposium included sessions on the playing field as well as classroom presentations. Rayfield and Menjivar gave presentations on Saturday morning that included video clips and highlighted U.S. Soccer’s Youth National Team programs, where the attacking ideas stressed at the symposium came to life at the higher levels. With the help of the U-16 Boys Region II Team and the U-15/U16 Girls Ohio North State Team, the sessions on the playing field allowed the coaches to see first-hand the attacking topics that were being discussed.
In addition to Rayfield and Menjivar, the sessions were led by some of the regions top coaches and instructors, including:
- Roby Stahl (Ohio South Director of Coaching, Boys Regional Staff Coach)
- Lori Walker (Ohio State University, Girls Regional Staff)
- Ian Barker (Minnesota Director of Coaching, Boys Regional Staff)
- Tom Turner (Ohio North Director of Coaching, Girls Head Regional Coach)
- Jim Launder (Wisconsin Director of Coaching, Boys Head Regional Coach)
On Saturday night, Brian Doyle and Glen Tourville were honored at the annual Region II Ron Wigg Memorial Dinner and Roast. Doyle, the Director of Coaching for the Michigan Wolves and Hawks, was awarded the annual Region II boys Ron Wigg Memorial Coaching Award, and Tourville, the head men’s and women’s coach at Hendrix College in Arkansas, was awarded the annual Region II Girls Ron Wigg Memorial Coaching Award.
Region II is comprised of 14 state associations and includes: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio North, Ohio South, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
