U.S. TO FACE PARAGUAY IN SEARCH OF THREE POINTS: The U.S. Futsal National Team faces Paraguay on Tuesday, Nov. 23 in their second match of the FIFA Futsal World Championship Chinese Taipei 2004. Paraguay is second in Group C, tied with Italy's three points but second on goal differential. The U.S. is in last place in the group after one game, with no points and a goal differential of -3 compared to a -1 differential for winless Japan. Three points would at least ensure that the U.S. was even with Paraguay in the standings. The Paraguay match will be available live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. The match will be broadcast nationwide by Galavision on same day delay at 10 p.m. ET on the east feed, and 10 p.m. PT on the west feed which covers the western United States.

PARAGUAY COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT JAPAN IN OPENER: Despite 3-1 and 4-3 leads for Japan, Paraguay was able to score in the 37th minute to tie and then the 38th minute to win by a final margin of 5-4. Walter Villalba scored in the 19th minute and also had the game-tying tally in the 37th minute. Rene Villalba, Jose Rotella and Oscar Velazquez also scored for Paraguay in the match - with Velazquez notching the game-winner. With a win against the United States, Paraguay would have the six points that would almost assure them of a place in the next round and eliminate the U.S. - as Italy is favored to win the group with nine points.

PARAGUAY OVERVIEW: Paraguay qualified for their second FIFA Futsal World Championship with a third place finish at Copa America, their region’s futsal championship. Carlos Villalba led the team on the field, winning the golden boot as his team put together a 4-1-1 record with 40 goals scored and 18 against. Results from their qualifying include a draw with Argentina, victories over Uruguay, Peru and Chile, and a loss to Brazil in the semifinals. On the bench, Adolfo Ruíz Díaz leads his team with the experience of having both coached and played professionally in Spain. Team captain Carlos Chilavert is a skillful defender who has playing experience in the Italian futsal league with Seep Luparense, the same team as Andre Vicentini of Italy. Two other players also play in Italy's professional ranks; forward Rene Villalba with Citta de Montesilvano and No. 10 midfielders Walter Villalba with Raiano. Internationally, despite an average age of just under 24 years, all but one Paraguay player has double-digit caps. Walter Villalba has the most experience with 61 caps, including 40 goals. Their leading international scorer is Carlos Villabla, with 42 strikes in 39 appearances.

SERIES HISTORY: The U.S. and Paraguay have met three times, with the only U.S. win coming when it counted, a 2-0 win at the first official FIFA Futsal World Championship in 1989. In that game Peter Vermes and Jim Gabarra scored for the United States and goalkeeper A.J. Lachowecki got the shutout. The most recent meeting was a 3-9 loss in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, on January 17, 1996. On that date, Brett Phillips started in goal and Sean Bowers also started. That appearance was the second of Bowers' international career. After the Italy match, Bowers is now tied with Gabarra with the most ever appearances - 30 - with the national team.
