Seattle Sounders FC Top Real So Cal in U-15/16 Group 1 Action

MILWAUKEE (July 12, 2011) – Goals from Austin Sweeney and Ian Lange negated a Real So Cal lead and lifted Seattle Sounders FC to a 2-1 victory in their second group game of the U-15/16 division at 2011 Development Academy Finals Week.

Seattle is even with the LA Galaxy at the summit of Group 1 on four points, but sit in second place because they are three behind in goal differential. The top teams will square off July 14 at 3 p.m. CT with a spot in the championship game on the line, the Sounders needing a victory in order to have a chance to play for the national title.

As with many of the matches in this age group during Finals Week, both teams came out with energy and tried to establish a good tempo. Seattle stayed organized defensively and was quick on the counter attack, while Real So Cal was able to maintain stretches of possession but had difficulty connecting in the final third.

Real So Cal had the best opportunity in the first half on a play that began with striker Stevie Manios drifting out wide and finding room to serve a ball into the area. Luke Rosescu had ghosted to the back post, but couldn’t get the timing right on his jump and he headed over from nine yards out.

The second half was only three minutes old when Real So Cal took the lead. Richard Martinez served as provider from the left flank, launching a cross to the far post. Angel Martinez rose above his mark and headed back across goal, tucking the ball inside the lower left corner.

Things began to heat up as both teams were involved in physical play, and Seattle took advantage of a foul 30 yards from goal to snare the equalizer. Austin Sweeney stepped up to take the free kick and unleashed a bending drive that penetrated the Real So Cal wall and spun away from goalkeeper Jonathan Price.

Real So Cal had a chance to go ahead on the hour mark after some nifty footwork by Lewis Perez put him through on goal in the area. He tried a snap shot from 12 yards out, but goalkeeper Keenan Townsend had himself well positioned to deny the effort.

Seattle went ahead for good in the 64th minute, once again taking advantage of a re-start opportunity. Earning a corner kick from the left side, the entry ball was skied towards the middle of the six-yard box where Ian Lange rose above the crowd, his knock-down header bouncing out of the reach of the ‘keeper and the defender positioned on the goal line.

Any chance of a comeback vanished in the 69th minute when defender Shane Steffes was shown a red card. Real So Cal maintained their level of effort, but Seattle kept a stranglehold on their lead for the final 10 minutes.
