Crossfire Premier Wins Group One with 2-0 Victory Against Derby County Wolves

CARSON, Calif. (July 15, 2010) – Crossfire Premier U-17/18 finished atop Group 1 and qualified for the championship match of the U-17/18 age division at the 2010 Development Academy Finals Week after defeating Derby County Wolves U-17/18 2-0 in Carson Calif.

Kelyn Rowe found himself involved in both goals as he was the provider on the first in the 57th minute and scored in the last minute of the match to send Crossfire to the championship game in dramatic fashion.

Going into the match, three clubs had viable chances of finishing on top of the group and making the championship match. FC Dallas led the group with four points. Crossfire and CASL Chelsea FC Academy both sat on three points, while Derby County held one point after drawing with CASL in their Finals Week opener.

Crossfire, knowing that only a win could get them into the final, started the match brightly. If FC Dallas and CASL drew their match, the Washington club would qualify as group winners with a win. However, if CASL won their match against FC Dallas, Crossfire would need to win by one more goal than the Carolina side to make up the goal differential, as both teams would be tied on six points.

In the opening stages of the match, Derby County looked the more dangerous side after 18 minutes when they strung together a sequence of chances. Their organized, patient play was forcing mistakes from Crossfire and they were gaining the upper hand while managing the game. The possession, however, did not translate into goals with Crossfire’s early balls over the top from midfield not producing much more either.

The second half started in a similar vein with a lot of ball movement but not much to pay for it. Crossfire stuck to their game plan though and in the 57th minute, another early ball out of midfield was nodded on by Rowe to Louis Schott, who had made a run behind the striker. Schott picked up the ball in his path, sidestepped a defender and buried a shot in the net from just inside the penalty area.

With the CASL-FC Dallas match tenuously poised to go either way, Crossfire needed at least one more goal to ensure passage to the final if CASL scored to take the game on the neighboring field.

The found just what they needed when Rowe popped up to score the goal that ultimately saw them through to the final. Using his speed, Rowe ran under a diagonal pass from the right side. As he broke into the box beyond his defender, the striker needed only one touch to hit a low shot to the far post and seal a 2-0 victory in the 90th minute.

That goal would turn out to be massive as CASL snatched a late win in the 95th minute, but Crossfire’s superior goal differential – +2 over +1 for CASL – saw them take first place in Group 1 and march into the championship match on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center.

That match will be against Group 2 winners, Vardar, at 7 p.m. PT on Field 1. Derby County Wolves finished bottom of the group and will face D.C. United at 1 p.m. ET on Field 3 on Saturday.
