U.S. Soccer Unveils Game-Specific Poster and Scarf for World Cup Qualifier Against Mexico in Columbus
New York-Based Artist Brent Rollins Designed Limited-Edition Poster
CHICAGO (Aug. 30, 2013) – U.S. Soccer unveiled today the game-specific poster and scarf for the upcoming U.S. Men’s National Team FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Mexico on Sept. 10 in Columbus, Ohio.
Designer Brent Rollins, who works in Brooklyn, N.Y., designed the game-specific poster and has been dedicated to producing iconic images and ideas for all media for more than 20 years. Rollins graphics, photo-collage and typography has spanned the entertainment, sportswear, publishing, and fine art worlds internationally.
Rollins has been profiled in American publications Print, Juxtapoz, Theme, Tokion, Re:Up, URB and XLR8R as well as in IdN (Hong Kong), Clark (France), Maps (South Korea), Cool-Trans (Japan), Status (Philipines), Made (Canada) and Superfly (Italy).
The limited-edition poster will be available during U.S. Soccer events in Columbus leading up to the USA-Mexico match, including Fan Headquarters (#FanHQ) and the Pep Rally at the Bluestone. There will also be a limited number of posters signed by Rollins for sale only on ussoccerstore.com.
“For this project, I wanted to depict the game as a classic epic confrontation,” said Rollins. “I’m attracted to the idea and narrative of conflict. Sport was explained to me early on as a way to assert aggression without either side suffering the real world consequences. It so happened that both countries’ mascots are eagles so I thought using those mascots would be a succinct way to envision these two cultures clashing rather than using the actual soccer players. It makes it more symbolic when you use a representation from a country versus a literal figure. It captures a more evocative mood and expands the work to a broader universal statement.”
The game-specific scarf is part of a series throughout the Final Round of World Cup Qualifying, with each scarf including a specific lyric from the Star-Spangled Banner. The USA-Mexico scarf includes the words “Land of the Free” on one side and “USA vs. Mexico – Columbus” on the other. Each fan in attendance for the match will receive the free scarf to wear with pride.
The scarves are only available to ticket purchasers that attend the match and will not be sold separately.
