Post-Game Quotes: USA 1, Guadeloupe 0

U.S. head coach BOB BRADLEY
"Overall, it was a good performance. It’s certainly a game at the end where we still feel we should have finished the game earlier. We had good chances to get the second goal. There were a lot of positives, and now we get ready to move forward."

On whether the team can reach the final:
"Our goal has always been to get to the final. We understand from experience what it means in group play. You have to deal with each game and find a way to advance. We were pretty hard on ourselves because we weren’t satisfied with our performance against Panama. Nonetheless, I think there are things there that bring the group together, and now we get ready for the knockout phase and approach it one game at a time."

On whether this game was a confidence builder or if there was frustration from not scoring more:
“Sometimes that’s the way the game goes. There may be a little bit of frustration that you didn’t finish the game and finish some of those chances. Still, it’s a shutout and positive to go forward.”

On the play of Eric Lichaj:
“I thought Eric did a solid job. Physically he matches up well with people. He’s good in one-on-one situations, and certainly he’s somebody who is a good possibility moving forward.”

On the stadium:
“It’s a great stadium. I think all the players were excited about every part of it. The stadium was really well done. It’s first class in every way. The atmosphere inside the stadium is fantastic. It’s always great to play in front of a crowd that’s there for us. In all ways, that part was excellent.”

On Jozy’s goal:
“He has an ability to shoot from distance. It was a good strike and a good goal.”

On the play of Alejandro Bedoya and Sacha Kljestan:
"Both games they came on the field at times that we needed some energy and some ability to make smart plays, and both have helped in those situations. The other night when Chris Wondolowski came on I thought he did a good job, so tonight he was rewarded with a start, and late in the game Mo Edu did a good job. So far our reserves have come on and helped the team. It’s important, and it’s great to see."

On his goal:
“I came off the defense and took a touch and saw that I had little bit of space. I said ‘why not.’ It was a good goal. Like I’ve said before it’s nice to score goals, and more importantly for us to win. That’s the best part. We haven’t been playing as good as we should be, but we got three points tonight and we’re looking now to the next round.”

On what the team needs to improve on:
“We recognize what we’re doing wrong. We have to come out and press all over the field and play some exciting soccer. We’ve addressed it. Little by little we’re getting better and when the games are on the line, in the bigger games, we’re going to play well.”

On the need for scoring in the knockout stage:
“Now if you don’t win you go home. Those chances come back to haunt you. Over the years we’ve gotten better and better at putting our chances away, but now more than ever we have to really stake our claim and score some of these goals.”

U.S. midfielder SACHA KLJESTAN
On his role as a sub:
“The coaches have told me to come onto the game and try to keep possession of the ball and keep it moving at a good pace and be honest working offensively and defensively and I’ve tried to do that. My passing’s been good, I’m making runs off the ball. I’m just trying to bring some energy to the game.”

U.S. midfielder LANDON DONOVAN
Summarizing the game:
“It was a pretty good performance. Better than the other night for sure. We just need to be better in front of the goal.”

On the team coming together:
“The idea in a tournament is to get better as it goes. We’re not a club team so we’re not together all the time. So you need time to build. Myself, personally, I only had three or four training sessions with the team before we got here and there were some other guys that were like that too. It takes time to build. I think we were satisfied with the fact that we played a little bit better, but again if we were a little cleaner it would have been an easier game for us.”

On improving in front of goal:
“We made a lot of good plays, a lot of good passes to get to the final spot. Our finishing let us down. Sometimes those go in and sometimes those do not, and we have to be better as a group in front of the goal.”

On how the team feels about the result:
“We want to be better. This is a game we should have won 3 or 4-0. But the reality is we won so that’s all that matters. If we win 1-0 or 5-0, we’re playing Jamaica. It is what it was tonight and we got a few days of training to try to get better.”

On the game:
“There’s going to be nights where you aren’t as sharp in the attacking third or in front of the goal as you need to be. It’s still positive that we were able to create a good number of chances tonight. We’ll definitely take away the positives from that … It’s important for us to keep improving with each game and know that the bigger games are still to come."

On creating chances:
“It’s still positive that we were able to create a good number of chances. It’s important that as we move forward in this tournament each game gets a little better, and each game we’re a little bit sharper. They don’t hand out a trophy after three games. It’s six games and the goal is at the end to be playing your best soccer.”

U.S. midfielder CLINT DEMPSEY
On the mood of the team:
“The morale is good. We expect a lot of ourselves. Tonight I wasn’t good enough with my chances. I just couldn’t buy a goal. The ball played across by Bedoya I should have hit first time. It was bobbling up a little bit and no one was on me. I thought I could take two touches. Wrong decision on my part. On the header in the first half, it was a great ball by Steve [Cherundolo] and I should have done better with it. Saying that, I tried my best to score for the team tonight. We still got the 1-0 win and that’s the positive thing.”

On the play of the younger players:
“It’s good. It’s great for them getting that experience. There are a lot of guys that have a lot of potential. It’s just about them getting games and doing well. It’s going to make this team stronger and we’ll have more depth.”
