June 1, 2013

U.S. U-20 MNT LOOKS TO REBOUND AGAINST CONGO DR IN TOULON TOURNAMENT: The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team faces the Democratic Republic of Congo’s U-21 national team in Group A play at the Toulon Tournament on Saturday, June 1. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. local (9:30 a.m. ET) at Stade des Costieres in Nimes and will be broadcast on delay (5 p.m. ET) on beIN SPORT. U-20 MNT head coach Tab Ramos and his squad are utilizing this tournament as the final stage toward preparing for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, as well as solidifying the 21-player roster for that event, which kicks off June 21 against Spain.

Group A Roundup: The U.S. dropped its second game of the tournament, falling to Colombia 2-1 on Thursday at Stade des Costieres in Nimes, France. Danny Garcia gave the USA its first lead of the tournament with a seventh-minute corner kick goal from the right side as his curling left-footed cross found the net. But Colombia responded in the second half as Harrison Mojica assisted goals by Jherson Vergara in the 44th minute and Felipe Aguilar in the 49th minute, holding off the USA for the game’s final half hour. In Thursday’s other Group A match, host France shut out Congo DR 1-0 with Benjamin Jeannot scoring the lone goal in the sixth minute.

Toulon Tournament Format: The tournament features 10 countries separated into two five-team groups. Each half is 40 minutes in length instead of the standard 45 minutes. The USA is in Group A with Colombia, Congo DR, France and Korea Republic. Group B features Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria and Portugal. The group stage features four games, after which the group winners face each other in the championship match and the group runners-up meet in the third-place game. Both matches take place on Saturday, June 8.

Following Saturday’s match, the U-20 MNT faces Korea Republic at 5 p.m. local (11 a.m. ET) on Wednesday, June 5, at Stade Louis Hon in Saint-Raphael.

  • Alonso Hernandez and Jordan Morris made their U-20 MNT debuts on May 28 against France. Hernandez started and played the full 80 minutes (Toulon Tournament matches are 10 minutes shorter than regulation games) and Morris was a second-half sub for Alfred Koroma in the 61st minute.
  • Daniel Cuevas is the leading scorer among the Toulon roster with three goals in 2013. Two came during the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and he scored the first goal during the Jan. 19 international friendly against Panama.
  • On the USA’s Toulon Tournament roster, Marlon Hairston is looking to make his first international appearance at this level.
  • Defender Javan Torre was a member of the 2010-11 Academy Finals Week champion Pateadores U-17/18 squad and defender Caleb Stanko played for the 2009-10 Academy champion Vardar U-17/18 side.
