Post-Game Quotes: WNT 2, Sweden 0

U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach PIA SUNDHAGE
On the match and switching to a 4-3-3 from a 4-4-2 at halftime:
“The way Sweden played in the first half and the way we struggled in the midfield, that’s why we made the change at halftime. Shannon Boxx sat in behind and (Lauren) Cheney played very well. That changed the whole game. It feels good to be able to play two systems.”

On Lauren Cheney’s performance off the bench:
“Two great goals. Fantastic. I am impressed with her coming off the bench. It’s good for all of us to know that someone coming off the bench can change the game and that’s what happened today.”

On the U.S. back line:
“They kept possession and they played some nice soccer in front of the back line, and we struggled a bit in midfield, but our back four, they did a fantastic job. (Rachel) Buehler had a really good game playing with (Amy) LePeilbet. Those two are really hard to beat even though Sweden had two very good players up top. Collectively in the back four we did a very good job.”

On the match:
“Sweden is so good at finding that run across the back line and our center backs did a great job of making sure they didn’t get behind them. In the second half, we switched to a 4-3-3 and had me sitting in there which kind of made them have to go around us. I think that stopped them a lot in their attack.”

On Lauren Cheney’s two-goal performance off the bench:
“She came in, had a lot of fire and got the team going. She took her chances and had two great goals.”

On coming on at halftime:
“At halftime, we talked about playing a 4-3-3 and putting them under pressure and just keeping the ball in their end. That was Casey (Nogueira) and my job, to come on and put on some pressure and that’s how we got the first goal, so I think we did our jobs.”

On her second goal, a blast from just outside the penalty area that made it 2-0:
“Well, I think I knew right when it hit my foot that it was just one of those shots. It was nice, because I was tired, so I was like ‘thank goodness we got some cushion.’”

On the match:
“Sweden came out and they were very dynamic in their attack. They were sending a lot of numbers forward and through the center of the midfield. Their forwards were kind of dictating a lot of the first half. We just had to fight through the first half and make it difficult for them. That’s our job in the back line. We came out with a little bit different mentality in the second half to dictate how we wanted to defend and not let their attack dictate to us. The formation (change) really helped having Boxxy sitting there in the middle and cleaning up balls for us. Our center backs did a great job covering for the outside backs as well. It was just a very challenging game.”
