Ryan Names U.S. Roster For Oct. 1 Match vs. Chinese Taipei at The Home Depot Center

CHICAGO (Sept. 29, 2006) – After four days of training at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Greg Ryan has named the 18-player roster from the 24 players in camp to face Chinese Taipei on Sunday, Oct. 1 at The HDC. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. PT and be shown live on ESPN2 as a capper to the first-ever Women’s Nike Friendlies, a four-day event featuring 25 club teams and three U.S. Youth National Teams currently taking place at The HDC.

Tickets for USA vs. Chinese Taipei, starting at $15, are on sale at ussoccer.com, all Southern California Ticketmaster outlets (including Robinson’s-May, Wherehouse Music and Tower Records), The Home Depot Center ticket office (stadium ticket office is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and by phone at 213-480-3232. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets by calling U.S. Soccer at 312-528-1290 or obtaining a group order form at ussoccer.com

The USA heads into the match against Chinese Taipei with a record of 11-0-3 in 2006 while Ryan has gone unbeaten at 18-0-4 in his 17 months at the helm of the U.S. team.

Defender Kate Markgraf, one of the USA’s veteran leaders, returns to a game roster for the first time since giving birth to her son on July 18 of this year. Markgraf, who has played 146 times for the USA while starting in the last two Women’s World Cups and Olympics Games, last played for the USA on Oct. 23, 2005. She trained with the USA for two days prior to the Sept. 13 match against Mexico in Rochester, N.Y., but has progressed well in her return to fitness and will be available to face Chinese Taipei.

Ryan also named speedy forward Danesha Adams to her first WNT game roster. Adams was one of the top players for the U.S. U-20s at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship in Russia this past August, leading the team in scoring with three goals. She won the Bronze Ball as the third most valuable player at the tournament. Adams, a junior at UCLA, has scored three goals in five games for the Bruins since returning from Russia.

U.S. forward Abby Wambach is sitting on 59 career goals and with her next score will tie the recently retired Shannon MacMillan for sixth on the all-time U.S. goal scoring chart. Wambach leads the U.S. in goals this year with 10. U.S. captain Kristine Lilly, by far the world’s all-time cap leader with 311 international games on her resume, has eight goals in 2006 and 112 in her landmark career.

In addition to Adams, Ryan named two other players to the roster who are currently involved in collegiate seasons in defender Stephanie Lopez and forward Megan Rapinoe, both from the University of Portland. Both Pilots saw action in the USA’s last match, a 3-1 win over Mexico on Sept. 13. Rapinoe is currently tied for the lead in scoring in the NCAA Division I with 10 goals while Lopez recently notched her first career score in a win over Northern Arizona.

The USA will play its final domestic friendly match of 2006 on Oct. 8 against Iceland at the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, Va. (tickets). The match kicks off at 2 p.m. ET live on ESPN2. After playing Iceland, the USA’s next games will be in South Korea at the 2006 Peace Queen Cup that will run from Oct. 28-Nov. 4 in six South Korean cities. That major tournament will lead into CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifying, which will take the form of the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup featuring the USA, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica. The tournament will be held at the end of November in the United States with the dates, match-ups and venues to be determined.
