Youth National Team Update: Aug. 11-Aug. 18

ADU HAS FOUR OF TEAM’S EIGHT GOALS IN WINS OVER SOUTH KOREA, SIERRA LEONE: The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team continued its string of impressive results by opening the FIFA U-17 World Championship with two wins and a whopping eight goals in Group D play. In their first match on Aug. 14, the U-17s avenged a 3-0 loss to Korea from earlier this year by running up a lopsided 6-1 result. After defender Brandon Owens gave South Korea a 1-0 lead on an own goal in the 11th minute, forward Freddy Adu equalized just five minutes later for the first of six team goals and the first of a hat trick that he completed with goals in the 89th and 90th minutes.  In their second match, the U-17s used superb goalkeeping from Phil Marfuggi and a penalty kick from Guillermo Gonzalez in the last minute of the first half to level the score at 1-1 against a tough Sierra Leone team before Adu ran down a perfect flick header from forward Jamie Watson and converted the game winner again in the 89th minute. With the win, the U.S. is assured a first or second place finish in Group D and a spot in the quarterfinals. The U.S. will face Spain in their third and final Group D game on Wednesday (Aug. 20) live on Galavision and via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker at 12:55 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT (tape delay). The winner of Group D is scheduled to take on the second place finisher in Group C (Brazil, Portugal, Yemen and Cameroon) on Sunday (Aug. 24), while the second place finisher in Group D will face the winner of Group C.
