Post-Match Quote Sheet

U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team Head Coach JILL ELLIS
On the team’s performance:
“First, we are thrilled to be going to the World Cup. I thought we had a better second half. We won more 50-50 balls and we kept better possession of the ball. Amber Brooks stepped in and played very well for us, and won a lot of balls. We raised our level in the second half, which is what we needed to do, and the players responded well. It was a bit unfortunate to give up a goal but I think the players are happy to be moving on.”

On how to keep the team focused on the 2010 CONCACAF U-20 Championship final:
“That is something we will probably discuss tomorrow. Right now, it’s about letting them soak it in and realize that they’re going to a World Cup. These players are so competitive and we all know we want to win a CONCACAF championship. Obviously the No. 1 priority was to qualify for the World Cup, but now we’ll zero in on winning the CONCACAF championship.”

On how the team responded to the second goal:
“Everyone was excited. In the first half, we didn’t get much out of our set pieces and we needed to be dangerous on those. I was really happy for Teresa (Noyola) and it took a little bit of the pressure off after having just a one-goal lead. It gave us a little bit of a buffer. It was a huge goal.”

U.S. U-20 WNT Forward SYDNEY LEROUX
On having qualified for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup:
“We are so excited. We are also relieved. This match against Costa Rica was definitely a tough game. It was very physical, but at the end of the day we did what we needed to do to get two goals and get the win.”

On keeping the team focused for the 2010 CONCACAF Championship final:
“A gold medal in anything is something you want. I’ve never won at qualifying. We won the World Cup, but I want to win both. Winning our region would definitely be special.”

U.S. U-20 WNT Midfielder CHRISTINE NAIRN
On the team’s performance against Costa Rica:
“We started off a little bit anxious and nervous because we knew that this was it to qualify for the World Cup. We had some jitters in the first half but when the second half came around we started playing our game and it led to two great goals.”

On qualifying for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup:
“It’s a great feeling and the pressure is a little bit off for us right now. But even though we have our ticket punched for the World Cup, that’s not enough for this team and we want to go for the CONCACAF championship because we fell short last time. We want to go home with a win this time.”

On whether it is as exciting for her to qualify for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as it was to qualify for the 2008 event:
“Yes, because this is a completely different team. Sydney and I have a bigger role. We’re not the babies of the bunch anymore and everyone is looking to us to face what we’re up against and count on us during the games. I think Sydney is doing a great job scoring all those goals. I think with her and the other players, we’re doing great. I hope we keep it up for the final.”

U.S. U-20 WNT Midfielder TERESA NOYOLA
On qualifying for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup:
“It’s an awesome feeling. Going into this tournament, our goal was to qualify for Germany. We did it and it feels amazing to be able to do that. We want to be champions as well, so we’re going to celebrate this victory and then prepare ourselves for the final.”

On her free kick goal:
“In the first half, I had one that wasn’t so great so I knew what I wanted to do this time and it was right in the spot that I like for free kicks. I saw the goalkeeper on one side so I knew that if I got it right over the wall that it had a good chance of going in, and it did.”
