U.S. U-20 Women Earn Second Win at Pan American Games in Brazil, Defeating Panama, 3-1, as Cheney, O'Hara and Heath Score

RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil (July 14, 2007) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Soccer Team defeated Panama, 3-1, in its second match of the 2007 Pan American Games at the Miécimo da Silva Sport Complex and moved to 2-0-0 in the competition.

Like the USA’s first game against Paraguay on July 12, the U.S. team once again found themselves down 1-0 early in the match, but like in the 7-1 thrashing of the Paraguayans, roared back to secure the victory.

The USA started the game on the defensive, repelling some early shots and corner kicks from the Panamanians, and gave up a goal after 21 minutes to Anarelis de Mera. Like she did in the USA first match, forward Kelley O’Hara pulled her team equal, scoring her third goal of the tournament in the 27th minute.

Forward Lauren Cheney, who notched a hat trick in the first match, the first of which put the USA in the lead, once again scored the game winner, tallying just three minutes after O’Hara’s. Forward Casey Nogueira set up both goals.

After giving up the first goal, U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was solid, making six saves to keep Panama off the board for the rest of the game, getting her first win of the tournament.

The USA got a clinching goal in the 53rd minute through halftime substitute Tobin Heath, who came on for Teresa Noyola, 17, the USA youngest player who saw her first action of the Pan Am Games.

All three goal scorers played for the USA at the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship last fall in Russia.

“I am pleased at this point with two wins in the competition,” said U.S. head coach Jillian Ellis. “But we have much to build upon after these two games. I am thankful that we have a few days to rest and prepare for Argentina.”

Argentina has brought its full Women’s National Team to the Pan Am Games and will participating in its first FIFA Women’s World Cup from Sept. 10-30 in China. The U-20s take on the Argentines on July 18 at João Havelange Stadium. The top two teams in each of the two five-team groups will advance to the semifinals.
