w/ U-20 MNT defender Chad Marshall

Life on the road with the U.S. Youth National Team features intense training sandwiched around hours of down time. Oh, and there are long flights to places like Spain, the Netherlands or the United Arab Emirates, where the Under-20 Men’s National Team will compete in the FIFA World Youth Championship from March 25 to April 16. Of course, one of the most popular ways to get through all the hectic schedule is to throw on some headphones (the big puffy kind, not the earplug variety) and just chill, which is what defender Chad Marshall does quite frequently.

Marshall hails from Riverside, Calif., and this fall moved a few hours north to enroll at Stanford University. All Marshall did in his first year at Stanford was become an instant starter, lead the team to the top of the polls, score an overtime game-winner in the NCAA Tournament and help Stanford to the NCAA Championship game, where the Cardinal lost 1-0 to UCLA. Marshall spent much of 2002 as a starting defender on the U.S. Under-20 side, helping the team post two shutouts in their first two qualifying matches to clinch a spot for UAE ‘03. Marshall admits he doesn't listen to a lot of CDs, but these are the discs that get him goin:

1.) Lifehouse, “No Name Face”:
“I like this album for their slow songs. Normally I listen to rap, but I like this because it’s a little different.”

2.) Clipse, “Lord Willin’”:
“This is a rap group that I really like. They’re a little faster than the norm, but are very good.”

3.) Cam’Ron, “Come Home With Me”:
“Another one of my favorite rappers.”

4.) Jay-Z, “The Blueprint”:
“Along with Eminem, he’s definitely one of the best rappers out there. He also put out ‘The Blueprint Two,’ but the original ‘Blueprint’ is definitely the best.”

5.) Eminem, “The Eminem Show”:
“Him and Jay-Z are the two best, and this is his best. You can't go wrong with the best of the best.”
