U.S. Soccer to Hold First Youth Women's Goalkeeper I.D. Camp

CHICAGO (Dec. 3, 2012) – U.S. Soccer will hold its first Women’s National Team youth Goalkeeper Identification Camp from Dec. 7-10 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The goal of the event is to start a process where the U.S. Soccer coaching staff annually identifies and evaluates a larger pool of goalkeepers at each birth year competing for the youth Women’s National Teams as well as investing in and developing a larger pool of ‘keepers for a longer period of time to improve the competitiveness for the starting position on those teams.

U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs and a staff of four goalkeeper coaches – former U.S. WNT goalkeeper coach Phil Wheddon, former U.S. WNT goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, former WPS goalkeeper coach Nathan Kipp and former U.S. U-20 MNT and MLS goalkeeper Clint Baumstark – will bring 16 goalkeepers to Chula Vista.

Ten of those goalkeepers will be age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup tournaments while six goalkeepers, chosen by U.S. Soccer Director of Development Jill Ellis, will be age-eligible for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup tournament.

The goalkeepers will have birth years ranging from 1994 through 1998. The purpose of the camp is to identify and evaluate the best goalkeepers from the 1994 and 1995 birth years to compete for the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup Team and the 1997 and 1998 birth years to compete for the 2014 U-17 Women’s World Cup Team.

Several talented goalkeepers in these age groups who have already been identified were not invited, thereby giving this group of players a chance to show themselves for possible selection for future training camps and CONCACAF qualifying rosters.

Five of the goalkeepers are currently in college: Caroline Casey (William & Mary), Andi Tostanoski (Santa Clara), Jamie Simmons (UNC Greensboro), Jordan Brown (Tennessee Tech) and Jillian McVicker (Ohio State). Two of the goalkeepers were on the USA’s 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Team in Cassie Miller (Sereno FC) and Morgan Stearns (McLean Power).
