CHICAGO (Wednesday, April 16, 2003) – U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach April Heinrichs and Nike announced today the latest recipients of the annual April Heinrichs / Nike Coaching Education Scholarships. The scholarships were created back in 2000 to honor coaches that have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to their soccer community.
The five April 2003 winners of the scholarships were chosen from an outstanding field of candidates from across the country and from every level of the sport. The winners are Todd Anckaitis (Northhampton, Mass.), Chrystalin Montgomery (Houston, Texas), Kate Ryan Reilling (Minneapolis, Minn.), Jennifer Tanaka (Torrance, Calif.) and Jamie Kay Woods (Lubbock, Texas).
For the last four years, ten scholarships have been awarded each year, including five each in April and September. Scholarship winners receive a $1,000 scholarship to help cover the cost of participation in a USSF National Coaching Course, including the National A, B and C Licenses.
“The award selection committee continues to be impressed with and challenged by the number of quality applications received for this wonderful opportunity,” said Heinrichs in announcing the awards. “It is exciting to see the number of coaches dedicated to their own education and the development of their players. There is no question that the growth and development of young female athletes is dependent on proper coaching at all levels and this award is indicative of Nike and U.S. Soccer’s commitment to that process.”
The following are the criteria one must meet to be considered as a candidate for this prestigious scholarship:
- Must be a coach of a women’s and/or girl’s team.
- Must coach at the recreational, club, high school, Olympic Development Program (district, state or regions), or college levels, excluding NCAA Division I Head Coaches.
- All NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III Head and Assistant Coaches are eligible.
- Division I Assistant Coaches are eligible.
NEXT SCHOLARSHIPS IN SEPTEMBER: The next April Heinrichs / Nike Coaching Education Scholarships will be awarded on September 15, 2003. The deadline for submitting applications is September 1, 2003. Previously received applications will be held over for the September 2003 award selections, with only those applicants who need to update their information needing to reapply.
The award is restricted to candidates applying for national level USSF courses. If your application was for a state level or non-USSF course you must re-apply to be considered for future scholarship awards.
The award committee selections are determined based on: contribution and involvement in the girl’s and women’s game, evidence of previous dedication to pursuing coaching education, financial considerations, and the impact that the education of this coach might have on the soccer community.
Next application deadline: September 1, 2003.
