Galaxy Earn a Place in Championship Game with 3-0 Win Against Seattle Sounders FC
MILWAUKEE (July 14, 2011) – Three second-half goals lifted the LA Galaxy to a win against Seattle Sounders FC and into the championship game at Development Academy Finals Week in Milwaukee. Goals from Sebastian Velasquez, Justin Dhillon and Jack McBean were enough as goalkeeper Josh McNeely held onto the shutout.
The Galaxy will face Group 2 winner PA Classics in a championship game that will be played on Saturday, July 16, at 8 p.m. CT at Valley Field at Marquette University.
The Galaxy dominated much of the possession in the early going, but it was the Sounders who nearly broke through on the game’s first chance in the 12th minute. A Sounders defender lifted a ball over the Galaxy defense and into the path of an on-rushing Jesse Klug, but McNeely saved the hard shot and remained sharp in his first test.
Much of the remainder of the half was played between the penalty boxes, as neither side was able to put together anything dangerous and the halftime score was 0-0.
In the second half, the Galaxy, who needed only a draw to advance to the championship, poured on the pressure and broke through just four minutes after the second half kickoff. A good individual effort got Velasquez around a defender and into the box before he took an uncontested shot hard and straight down the middle of the goal that gave ‘keeper Keenan Townsend little chance.
In the 57th minute, the Galaxy pounced on a giveaway in their attacking third, the ball finding the feet of Justin Dhillon. He smacked the ball hard off the crossbar, collected the rebound and took a second shot that hit off the left post and in.
Just two minutes later, a Galaxy free kick was played toward the penalty area, where McBean flicked a header backwards while facing away from the goal. The ball popped up and over Thompson as he rushed off his line to try to block the ball, and bounced over the goal line to make it 3-0.
