CARSON, Calif. (July 12, 2009) - Despite capitalizing on a PDA mistake in the fifth minute, U-17/18 CASL Chelsea Academy FC could not hold onto their lead, eventually falling to PDA 3-1 under the lights at The Home Depot Center on the third day of D.A. Finals Week. In a physical match that saw six yellow and two red cards, J.P. Rosero’s two first half goals allowed PDA to get back in the game, settle down and get the victory.
Teams had barely settled on their benches when CASL opened the scoring with a goal in the fifth minute. Holding onto the ball too long in the back, PDA goalkeeper William Smith’s attempt to clear fell to the feet of Thomas Garner. Reacting calmly, the midfielder dribbled around Smith and passed the ball into the center of the net.
It was a short-lived celebration, however, as PDA kept calm and began passing the ball around. Seeing Rosero angling to run behind the defense from the left, PDA midfielder Alex Bramall chipped the ball over CASL’s back line where Rosero collected and put a shot past the goalie and into the bottom right corner to tie the game in the 7th minute.
PDA was deep in the CASL end again a few minutes later, and an attempted clearance hit the chest of a defender. Deflecting into the right corner, CASL defender Isack Nyongabo took possession. His clearance was blocked and collected by PDA’s Jossimer Sanchez, who centered the ball to a wide-open Rosero. With the ‘keeper sprawling, the forward one-timed his shot into the bottom left-hand corner for a 2-1 lead in the 19th minute.
The New Jersey side kept up the pressure, and earned a free kick in the 31st minute that PDA defender Hunter Gorskie stepped up to take. From just outside the box on the right side, Gorskie struck the ball with pace and accuracy, putting it around the wall and into the upper right corner.
An already physical match became even more heated in the second half, as frustration mounted on both sides over missed opportunities. CASL thought they had a chance to climb back into the game when J.P. Rosero was sent off with a direct red card in the 48th minute, but not ten minutes later their own Charles Root was also sent packing after a very late tackle.
CASL now falls to 0-2-0 in Finals Week, while PDA is 1-1-0. The New Jersey club next faces D.C. United on Tuesday, July 14 at 4 pm while CASL will face Real Colorado at the same date and time.
