CHICAGO (Monday, April 2, 2001) - The U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team finished the WUSA Pre-Season Tournament with an undefeated 1-0-2 record in head coach Jerry Smith's first training camp with the squad, including a win against the San Diego Spirit in the tournament's final match at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. U.S. goalkeepers Jen Branam and Liz Wagner shined for the U.S. in the win, combining to make nine saves in the shutout. Anne Morrell provided the game's only goal in the 48th minute, converting a pass from Aly Wagner, U.S. Soccer's Chevrolet Young Female Player of the Year in 2000. The U.S. also played to a pair of 3-3 draws in the tournament, opening the tourney with a 3-3 knot against the Philadelphia Charge and following with another 3-3 tie against the Washington Freedom (March 28). The U.S. used three first-half goals to jump to an early lead against the Freedom, before a Wen Lirong penalty kick in the 58th minute secured the final scoreline. Ally Wambach tallied twice for the U.S. with Betsy Barr adding the other. In the tournament opener, it was Morrell who again provided the offense for the USA with two tallies in the second half. The U.S. equalized on an own goal from Doris Fitschen in the 90th minute.
