U.S. U-20 MNT Ties Russia, Sits in Second of Group A at L'Alcudia Tournament

L’ALCUDIA, Spain (Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003) – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team earned a 1-1 draw with Russia on Saturday (Aug. 23) in their second match of the 2003 L’Alcudia International Tournament. The U.S. Opened the tournament on Thursday, Aug. 21 with a 3-0 win over Egypt.

The U.S. sits atop Group A with of the tournament with a 1-0-1 record. Russia also has four points, but trails the U.S. in goal differential. The U.S. will face Slovakia in the final group match on Monday.

The U.S. opened the scoring it what was a very physical match with a penalty kick conversion by forward David Johnson in the 14th minute. Marc Burch drew the penalty as he was dragged down in the box why attempting to get on the end of a cross from Clint Dempsey.

The Russian attack was persistent in the second half. The U.S. had few chances – mostly free kicks and corners – none of those became good scoring chances. Russia tied the score just six minutes in as Igor Shevshenko recorded the goal from Aleksander Maslov.

In Group B news, Gabon ended up backing out of the tournament and was replaced by a regional team from Spain.
