Arena's First U.S. Men's National Team Selections Feature Mix of Youth, Experience

CHICAGO (Wednesday, October 28, 1998) - Newly appointed USA head coach Bruce Arena announced his first full U.S. Men's National Team roster today, naming five World Cup veterans and nine first-time players to a squad which will face Australia at Spartan Stadium in San Jose on Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The match marks the USA's first game since the 1998 World Cup in France.

The five World Cup veterans on the team include forwards Brian McBride and Joe-Max Moore, midfielder Cobi Jones, and defenders Jeff Agoos and Eddie Pope. Defender Mike Burns and midfielder Brian Maisonneuve, both starters in the 1998 World Cup, were on the initial player listing, but not called up for different reasons. Burns is getting married the weekend of the San Jose match, and Brian Maisonneuve is still recuperating from injury playing for the Columbus Crew in MLS.

With the team due to arrive in San Jose to begin five days of training on Sunday (Nov. 1), Arena chose not to bring in any Americans currently playing abroad, including veteran goalkeepers Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel.

The nine players on the 22-player roster searching for their first U.S. National Team appearance are defender C.J. Brown (Chicago Fire), defender Leo Cullen (Miami Fusion), goalkeeper Kevin Hartman (Los Angeles Galaxy), goalkeeper David Kramer (San Jose Clash), midfielder Clint Mathis (Los Angeles Galaxy), midfielder Ben Olsen (D.C. United), defender Mike Petke (N/NJ MetroStars), midfielder Ritchie Williams (D.C. United) and forward Josh Wolff (Chicago Fire).

In addition to Kramer, hometown hero Paul Bravo of the Colorado Rapids earned his third call-up. Bravo led the Clash with 13 goals back in 1996. Current San Jose Clash star Eddie Lewis was selected in the midfield. One of Major League Soccer's all-time assist leaders, Lewis is looking for his second career appearance for the USA.

Just three players on the roster are over 30 years of age: Agoos (30), Bravo (30) and Fraser (31).

Tickets for the match are on sale at the Spartan Stadium Box Office. Fans can also purchase tickets by calling the Clash directly at 408/985-GOAL. Tickets are also available at all BASS Ticket Outlets or by calling 408/998-BASS. The game will be televised tape delayed on ESPN on Nov. 10 at 9 p.m. (PT).
