U.S. U-23 WNT Comes Back from Two Goals Down to Defeat Norway 3-2

LA MANGA, Spain (March 1, 2011)The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team scored three times - two from substitutes - in a 13-minute span at the end of the match to come back from two goals down and defeat Norway 3-2 giving the Americans the championship at the Four Nations Tournament.

The USA dominated the shot total for the match 17-4 but Norway took the lead with a header goal off a corner kick in the 17th minute from Marita Skammelsrud and got another just after halftime from Tina Algrey to take the 2-0 lead.

The USA’s comeback started in the 71st minute as Melissa Henderson tallied off an assist from Keelin Winters. Eight minutes later, Sarah Hagen tied the game with her third goal in as many games, pounding in a header from nine yards out off a cross from Meghan Klingenberg.

The winning goal came just four minutes later in the 83rd minute as Hagen won a tackle and slid a pass through the defense to Casey Nogueira in the left side of box. Nogueira cut inside and then beat the Norwegian goal keeper Ane Fimreite just inside the right post.

The USA finished first in the tournament with seven points from the three matches. England was second with five points, followed by Sweden with three and Norway with one.

U.S. head coach Bill Irwin brought a roster of 18 players to Spain, 10 of whom will be playing WPS this upcoming season and are now headed to pre-season training camps.
