U.S. U-20 Women's National Team Rolls Past England in Germany, 4-1
Flensburg, GERMANY (June 22, 2009) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated the England U-20s by a 4-1 score in a match played in Flensburg, Germany, as forward Maya Hayes came off the bench to score twice while Sydney Leroux and Tiffany McCarty added a goal each.
The match is the first of a two-game set in Germany as the Americans will also play the German U-20 Women’s National Team on Friday, June 26, at Wolfgang Meyer Stadion in Hamburg. Germany will host the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in last summer of that year. The USA will attempt to qualify for that tournament in next January during a CONCACAF qualifying competition in Guatemala.
The USA started the scoring three minutes before halftime as Leroux, the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe winner at 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile, ran onto a through ball from Beth West and slotted home into the right corner to give the USA a 1-0 lead.
The Americans broke the game open in a six-minute span early in the second half. This time West put McCarty through and she stuck her shot into the right side-netting. Hayes, who came into the game in the 52nd minute, gave the USA almost immediate offense, tallying her first of the game five minutes later after Christine Nairn played a through ball, splitting the England backs. Hayes ran onto the ball, took a touch and placed her low shot into the right corner.
Hayes finished the scoring in the 72nd minute after beating a defender down the right wing. She turned toward goal and shot low into the near post.
England pulled a goal back off a header from a corner kick in the 78th minute, but the match was well in hand by then.
“It was a solid start to the trip, we got four excellent goals and some terrific attacking movement,” said U.S. head coach Jillian Ellis. “These games are a great opportunity to evaluate our players and another step toward assembling the pieces for qualifying. I know everyone is looking forward to playing Germany which will be a real test to see where we are at this point in our preparations.”
