El Paso Begins Open Cup Qualifying with 7-0 Rout of D3 Arizona

CHICAGO (Monday, April 16, 2001) - The El Paso Patriots (A-League) jumped to the top of the Group 8 standings in A-League/D3 Pro League qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup as they defeated the Arizona Suhuaros (D3) 7-0 on Sunday at the Socorro Student Activities Complex in El Paso, Texas. El Paso used a 9-0 shot advantage in the first half to jump out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back, going on to post a 17-1 shot advantage in the match. The Group 10 match between San Diego (A-League) and Stanislaus United (D3) was postponed and will be made up at a later date. U.S. Open Cup qualifying continues this week with four more matches in A-League/D3 Pro League Interleague qualifying.

%=macroPart|font/arialBlue2=%Open Cup Qualifying in PDL Starts This Saturday:The "Battle of the Bayou" between the Louisiana Outlaws and the expansion Lafayette Lightning will kick off U.S. Open Cup Qualifying in the USL's Premier Development League (PDL) on Saturday when the two meet for the first time. The PDL's qualification process remains unchanged from 2000, as the league will send four teams to the U.S. Open Cup again in 2001. The league's conferences will serve as the three groups for the qualification round. The three group winners and the best second place finisher will advance to the Open Cup's first round, where they will face four representatives from the United States Amateur Soccer Association.
