U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team Defeats German Club VFL Bochum 3-1 in Scrimmage

Terrence Boyd, Tony Taylor and Dilly Duka Get Goals in the Win against Bundesliga 2 Side; U-23 Men’s National Team Camp Continues in Duisburg until Nov. 15

BOCHUM, Germany (Nov. 11, 2011) – The U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team defeated VfL Bochum 3-1 in a scrimmage in Germany on Friday. Goals from Terrence Boyd, Tony Taylor and Dilly Duka gave the USA the victory against a Bundesliga 2 side comprised of first and youth team players.

After a tentative opening, the U.S. fell behind in the 20th minute. Bochum exploited some space on their left wing, where left back Matthias Ostrzolek lifted the ball to the far post for teammate Christoph Dabrowski to nod home relatively uncontested.

The U.S. responded well and evened the match through Terrence Boyd in the 42nd minute. Mixx Diskerud played a well-timed ball over the top for a streaking Sheanon Williams. The Philadelphia Union right back crossed for Boyd, who knocked home a tap-in from close range to tie the game.

The USA, coached on the sideline by Claudio Reyna, grew in influence in the second half. Eventually they were rewarded for their pressure with a breakthrough in the final ten minutes. Amobi Okugo, wearing the captain’s armband for the USA, set up substitute Tony Taylor on the right side of the box. The forward did the rest, skipping inside his man before drilling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from 18 yards out.

Two minutes later the USA added an insurance goal, with Taylor again playing a part. The Atletico Clube de Portugal striker set up fellow substitute Dilly Duka at the top of the box. Duka made no mistake, powering home a shot from 16 yards to seal the 3-1 win.
