U.S. WNT vs. China PR: Post-Game Quote Sheet

U.S. WNT vs. China PR
Ford Field; Detroit
Dec. 8, 2012

U.S. Midfielder CARLI LLYOD
On the match:
“They were a little chippy and it makes for a tougher game. But I think we turned it around a bit in the second half with some changes and played very well. I think the biggest thing is when we get them pushed to one side we’ve got to switch the point of attack because all their numbers are there.”

On her goal:
“Tobin was in a 50/50 situation, got the ball and did what she does best, dribbling at players and making them commit and she played a perfectly-weighted ball to me with the outside of her foot. I knew there was a player charging me so I knew my first touch was going to be the most important in order to set me up for a goal scoring opportunity. I took a touch with my right and was able to have a clear path at goal and shot it near post. That’s what I train for, to come up in big moments and try to help my team in any way possible.”

On the Ford Field turf:
“We’re not a huge fan of turf. We prefer grass obviously. For us older people, you take a little bit of a beating, but we adjusted since we knew it was fast pace. The crowd was awesome and the 17,000 people was just great.”

On the last two matches of the tour:
“We need to continue the wave and the momentum. It’s about just keeping this game popular and our team on top.”

U.S. Forward AMY RODRIGUEZ
On being captain the captain to honor her 100th cap:
“A little weird for me to be wearing the captain’s band but it felt great and I was excited to lead my team in that way. To celebrate my 100th cap, it felt pretty cool.”

On almost scoring on her 100th game:
“On the kickoff play I got a really close, it was a good chance. I hit it to the ‘keeper which I was a little bummed about but it would have been nice to score in my 100th game.”

On China PR:
“China played well today and they didn’t give us a lot of chances, but I think we got a few more in the second half. The turf a little bit tough to play on. We couldn’t quite get our footing right and our shots weren’t hitting the target as we would have liked, but we got two goals and a win so that is what we’re excited about.”

U.S. Midfielder MEGAN RAPINOE
On the crowd:
“It was awesome to get 17,000 [fans] here and a win. The crowd was tremendous and the drums up top were really cool.”

On China PR:
“They’re a tough team to play against, real disruptive in general and they close the ball down really quickly. I don’t think the surface helped as well. It kind of pops the ball up and makes for a back and forth game.”
