2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal Preview

The Quarterfinal Round of the 100th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is set to get underway Wednesday, with eight teams playing four games in cities across the country.

New England Revolution (MLS) at D.C. United (MLS)
Wednesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. ET

The New England Revolution were victorious against the New York Red Bulls 4-2 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals, and they’ll go up against D.C. United, who beat the Philadelphia Union 3-1 behind a hat trick from Dwayne De Rosario. D.C. United has an 8-1-1 record in 11 Quarterfinal Open Cup matches. The last four times they’ve appeared in the quarterfinals, they’ve advanced.

Orlando City SC (USL PRO) at Chicago Fire (MLS)
Wednesday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. CT

USL Pro side Orlando City SC pulled off arguably the biggest upset of the round, downing MLS affiliate and defending Open Cup champions Sporting Kansas City. The Lions travel to Illinois for a date with the Chicago Fire, who beat their MLS rivals the Columbus Crew, 2-1, with a late strike from Patrick Nyarko. The Fire are tied for the second most Open Cup Championships with 4, just one behind five-time winners Bethlehem Steel and Maccabi Los Angeles.

Carolina RailHawks (NASL) at Real Salt Lake (MLS)
Wednesday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. MT

Real Salt Lake will host an Open Cup game for the third straight round when the Carolina RailHawks travel to Sandy, Utah, for the quarterfinals. Real Salt Lake completed a two goal comeback in the fourth round to win 5-2 against the Charleston Battery. Carolina upset a Los Angeles team for the second round in a row with a 3-1, extra time win against Chivas USA. Carolina has advanced to the quarterfinals twice in the Open Cup, the last being in 2007 when they advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 win against the Richmond Kickers.

Portland Timbers (MLS) at FC Dallas (MLS)
Wednesday, June 26 at 8:00 p.m. CT

Two of the best teams in MLS will face off when the Portland Timbers travel to Frisco, Texas, to take on FC Dallas. Portland toughed out a 2-0 win against a feisty Tampa Bay Rowdies team, while FC Dallas’ Kenny Cooper scored a pair of goals in a 3-0 win against in-state rival Houston Dynamo. FC Dallas have the most quarterfinal appearances of any MLS team with 13, and they own a 6-5-1 record in those contests.

This will be the second time New England and D.C. will square off this season, the other resulting in a 0-0 draw on June 8. Portland and Dallas have played twice this season, the first, a 1-1 draw on May 8, and the second a 1-0 Portland win on June 15, just three days after the fourth round of the Open Cup.
