Los Angeles Galaxy Defeat Under-20 Men's National Team, 4-1, in Scrimmage
PASADENA, Calif. (Wednesday, April 11, 2001) - The Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team, 4-1, in a closed-door scrimmage at the Rose Bowl today. The Galaxy faced off against a U-20 U.S. squad that included many members of the team that breezed through the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Trinidad last month and qualified for the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship, to be played in Argentina this June.
Los Angeles came out strong in the first half as Cobi Jones and Ezra Hendrickson each scored to give the MLS side a 2-0 lead. At the half, Los Angeles made wholesale substitutions, but kept up the scoring pace with an additional two goals from Marvin Quijano and Brian Kelly.
Defender Oguchi Onyewu scored the lone U.S. goal in the 70th minute to cut the L.A. lead to 3-1, finishing a loose ball inside the 18-yard box, after Galaxy goalkeeper Matt Reis misplayed it.
