U.S. U-20 WNT Will Hold Camp with the U.S. U-23 WNT at The Home Depot Center

CHICAGO (April 1, 2013) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team will come together for the third time in 2013, holding a training camp from April 13-20 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. that will be run concurrently with a U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team camp.

The two squads will scrimmage each other on April 16 at 10 a.m. PT and on April 19 at 4 p.m. PT.

The U.S. U-20s are coming off three matches in La Manga, Spain, where it tied Norway and Sweden and lost to Germany.

New U.S. head coach Michelle French has named a roster of 24 players but will likely name two more before camp commences. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Canada. French has called up 12 players born in 1994 and 11 players born in 1995.

Ten of the players from the 2012 U.S. Under-17 Women’s World Cup Team in Azerbaijan were called up for this event while one – defender Cari Roccaro – was a part of the team that won the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. Roccaro, who played her freshman year at Notre Dame last fall, was a starter on the U-20 squad and played a key role in shutting down a powerful German attack in the championship game.

Twelve players on the roster are still in high school while 11 are in college, including two each from Santa Clara and Notre Dame. There is one professional player in camp, forward Lindsey Horan, who trained with the U.S. Women’s National Team at the recent Algarve Cup in Portugal and earned her first senior team cap when she came on as a substitute against China on March 8. Horan missed last month’s tournament in La Manga due that spell of training with the senior side.

Horan was the U-20s leading scorer in 2012 but missed last year’s Women’s World Cup due to a knee injury. She is the first female player to skip college soccer and sign a professional contract and is currently playing with Paris Saint-Germain in France.
