U.S. Under-17 MNT Kick Off Week-Long Foreign Training Camp in Madrid, Spain

CHICAGO (Feb. 14, 2009) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team is en route to Madrid, Spain, for a week-long training camp from Feb. 14-22, that includes matches against Spain, a Real Madrid youth team and a team yet to be finalized.

Of the 20 players that will travel to Madrid, 17 were part of the team’s most recent foreign trip in Chile, where they built an impressive 3-0-1 record against South American teams to take the La Serena Cup title. Jack McInerney led the U.S. team in La Serena with three goals, while Michael Ambrose, Charles Renken and Bryan Duran each added single tallies. Current top-choice goalkeeper Earl Edwards played three games in Chile, allowing just one goal while earning three wins.

Two players not currently in Residency, Sebastian Lleget and Bobby Wood, will be joining the U.S. in Spain. Lleget is a South San Francisco, Calif. native currently training in Europe while Wood is part of 1860 Munich’s youth system. Both European-based players will be joining the team for their first training camp under head coach Wilmer Cabrera.

The U.S. U-17 MNT is preparing for the upcoming CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, which will be held from April 21-May 2 in Tijuana, Mexico. The U.S. will open its campaign against Cuba on April 21, Canada on April 23 and Honduras on April 25. If the U.S. advances to the semifinals out of Group A, they will also earn a berth to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, slated for Nigeria from Oct. 24-Nov. 16.
