CASL Chelsea FC Academy U-17/18 Hands Derby County Wolves 2-1 Loss

CARSON, Calif. (July 11, 2010) – 2009 Development Academy Finals Week defending U-15/16 champions Derby County Wolves, now competing in the U-17/18 age division, fell 2-1 to CASL Chelsea FC Academy FC Academy U-17/18 in their opening match of the 2010 Finals Week at The Home Depot Center.

CASL used two goals on either side of halftime to build a 2-0 lead in the 68th before Derby County pulled a goal back deep into second half stoppage time. Harrison Delbridge opened the scoring in the 33rd minute and Matthew Wescoe doubled CASL’s lead from a Michael Forsyth feed. Derby County’s tally came from the foot of Joshua Barens, but would not prove to be decisive as the match ended moments after finding the back of the net.

The match started with promise as both teams looked to settle the ball and play on the ground linking passes through the midfield. By the tenth minute, Derby County was putting together flowing combinations and took the early advantage in terms of possession.

The match continued to take on a tense, tactical atmosphere as CASL started to find its footing in midway through the half. Both teams were searching to unlock the opposing defense but more often than not ended up trading possession through errant passes or searching balls into the attacking third.

It was just such an occasion that produced the game first goal as the CASL midfield played the ball across the top of the Derby County area from right to left. A short, hopeful chip over the center of the defense was not cleared properly and fell to Delbridge, who finished on the half volley from just inside the box to give CASL the 1-0 lead.

The goal, however, did little to change the tone of the play aside from short bursts from Derby County in search of an equalizer as the first half closed with more closed, cagey play from both sides.

CASL would start the second half on the front foot as Derby County looked to make tactical changes to get back into the match. Still, no team could find a firm advantage as the speed of play picked up with the Wolves pushing for a goal with more urgency.

Their eagerness led to a CASL break down the left after a turnover in the 68th minute. The ball was cycled back across the midfield to the right after the initial penetration was snuffed out by the Derby County defense. Forsyth was able to beat his man to the end line on the right flank and square a ball across the face of goal where Wescoe met it with one-time finish to double the lead with 22 minutes remaining.

Derby County pushed even harder for its first goal now, playing more direct and piling numbers forward. It was not to be their night as the CASL defense held resolute and turned back the Wolves’ attacks. Not until after a lengthy injury delay in stoppage time did Barens find the back of the net for Derby County, but it was too little too late as the referee blew for full time just moments later.
CASL, now top of Group 1, next play Crossfire Premier at 4 p.m. PT on July 13 on Field 2 at The Home Depot Center. Derby County Wolves will look to bounce back against FC Dallas, who also won their opener, at 3 p.m. PT on Field 1, also on July 13.
