Seven of Eight Major League Soccer Teams Advance to Quarterfinals of 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
USL PRO Richmond Kickers Defeated Columbus Crew 2-1 to Advance as the Only Division III Team
CHICAGO (June 28, 2011) – Seven of eight Major League Soccer teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Richmond Kickers (USL PRO) was the only Divison III team to advance, winning 2-1 against the Columbus Crew.
The seven MLS teams advancing are New York Red Bulls, Chicago Fire, Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas, Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders and Los Angeles Galaxy.
The Richmond Kickers upset the Columbus Crew with a 2-1 win at Crew Stadium. The Kickers opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a goal by Nozomi Hiroyama off an assist by Stanley Nyazamba. In the 37th minute, Cole Grossman scored the equalizer for the Crew. The score remained tied at 1-1 and appeared to be headed into extra time. In the 85th minute, Matthew Delicate headed in the game-winner for the Kickers to send them to the quarterfinals where they will face Sporting KC.
Richmond, the only USL PRO team to reach the quarterfinals, earned the $10,000 prize for the Division III club advancing the furthest in this year’s tournament. The Chicago Fire PDL, having won two games against sides from the same division in earlier rounds, won the $10,000 Amateur Division prize via a tiebreaker over the Kitsap Pumas, who won one and tied one (games resolved via penalties are recorded as ties).
The eight winners will face off in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, July 12. The semifinals will be played on Tuesday, Aug. 30 and the 2011 U.S. Open Cup final is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4.

25. FC New York (USL PRO) 1, New York Red Bulls (MLS) 2
With the Red Bulls generating many opportunities in the first half, they failed to capitalize and ended the first half scoreless with FC New York. In the 56th minute, FC New York opened the scoring with Owen Morrison burying a shot from 30 yards out. Two minutes later, the Red Bulls responded with the equalizer goal from Corey Hertzog. In the 65th minute, John Rooney scored the game-winner from a distance to send the Red Bulls to the quarterfinals.
26. Chicago Fire (MLS) 1, Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO) 0
Diego Chaves scored the lone goal of the game in the 37th minute when he smacked the ball into the net for the Fire. The score remained for the rest of the match and was enough to put the Fire through to the next round.
27. Richmond Kickers (USL PRO) 2, Columbus Crew (MLS) 1

28. Wilmington Hammerheads (USL PRO) 0, Real Salt Lake (MLS) 2
Real Salt Lake scored in the 40th minute with Tony Beltran slamming a shot off the right post and in. Four minutes later and just before the half, Jean Alexandre shrugged off a defender inside the area and slotted one home from 10 yards out for the insurance goal. Real Salt Lake earned the 2-0 shutout.
29. Orlando City Soccer Club (USL PRO) 2, FC Dallas (MLS) 3
In the 23rd minute, Orlando City drew first blood with a goal by Max Griffin. FC Dallas responded in the 38th minute with a goal by Jackson to send the game tied 1-1 into halftime. In the 50th minute, Ricardo Villar scored to put FC Dallas up 2-1. Two minutes into second half injury time, Yordany Alvarez appeared to be sending the game into extra time with the equalizer. Seconds before the final whistle, Milton Rodriguez responded with the game-winner and sent FC Dallas through to the quarterfinals.
30. Chicago Fire PDL (PDL) 0, Sporting Kansas City (MLS) 3
Sporting Kansas City scored early in the third minute with a goal by Teal Bunbury. The score remained 1-0 at the half, but in the 50th minute, Milos Stojcev would double the lead with a left-footed goal. Two minutes later, Kei Kamara headed home the third goal for Sporting Kansas City to earn the dominating 3-0 shutout.
31. Kitsap Pumas (PDL) 1, Seattle Sounders (MLS) 2
Seattle Sounders scored 39th minute off a Mike Fucito goal, who doubled the lead in the 62nd minute. In the 71st minute, Nikolas Besagno cut the deficit in half for the Kitsap Pumas, but they could not find the back of the net again, sending the Sounders through to the quarterfinals.
32. Los Angeles Blues (USL PRO) 1, Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) 2
The game remained scoreless going into halftime, with both teams unable to find the back of the net. In the 62nd minute, Cesar Rivera scored the first goal of the game for the Blues. In the 76th minute, Omar Gonzalez scored the equalizer with a strong header, and Mike Magee scored the game-winner five minutes later to give the Galaxy the 2-1 win.
