CHICAGO (April 19, 2005) - The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team finished their tour of Holland with a 4-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach U-21 squad in Maasbree, Holland. With the victory, the U.S. finished the tour undefeated, going 2-0-1 during the weeklong trip.
Jacob Peterson scored in the first half and Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Rogers and Charlie Davies all scored in the second half for the U.S. as they dominated possession for long stretches of the match. The U.S. defense held Monchengladbach to just one shot all game, and 'keepers Andrew Kartunen and Justin Hughes didn't have to make a single save.
Peterson started the scoring in the 18th minute. Tim Ward unleashed a shot that was saved by the Monchengladbach 'keeper, but Peterson was there for the rebound, blasting his shot into the back of the net.
The U.S. got off to a good start three minutes into the second half as Kljestan got free in the penalty area and was taken down from behind to win a penalty kick. The Seton Hall midfielder took the spot kick, burying it past the 'keeper for a two-goal lead.
The U.S. got two more goals in the final ten minutes of the game as Davies raced down a ball on the right flank, getting to it before it rolled over the endline and quickly knocked the ball into the box where Rogers latched onto the pass to knock it into the right corner.
Davies got a goal of his own before the final whistle when he ripped a blast from the top of the penalty area that went to the upper-left corner, giving the Monchengladbach 'keeper no chance for a save.
The U.S. players and staff will return to the States on Wednesday (April 20).
Earnie Stewart and Kasey Keller came out to the game and talked to the players for awhile.
