U.S. U-23 WNT Defeats Norway 1-0 in La Manga

LA MANGA, Spain (Feb. 4, 2008 ) -- The U.S. U-23 Women's National Team won the first of two matches it will play during the three-team competition in La Manga, Spain, downing Norway, 1-0, on a 74th minute goal from midfielder Yael Averbuch. It was the first international match of the year for the U.S. U-23s.

The Americans controlled the match throughout, outshooting Norway by a large margin and piling up nine corner kicks to zero for the Scandinavians. The winning goal came after midfielder Christen Press dribbled into the right corner past a defender, cut into the middle and played a pass across the top of the penalty area to Averbuch, who took a touch to her left and blasted her shot into the upper right corner. \

U.S. head coach Bill Irwin used all 16 field players on his roster and goalkeeper Kelsey Davis went the distance in the nets for the USA. The U-23s will face the England U-23s on Friday, Feb. 6 in their second and final match to the tour.
