U.S. Under-17s Fall 2-1 To Costa Rica in Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Wednesday, January 29, 2003) - The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team gave up two late first half goals to fall 2-1 to Costa Rica earlier today at Saprissa Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The young U.S. side went ahead in the 33rd minute, when Brandon Owens set up Eddie Gaven (MetroStars-MLS) for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.  But the U.S. side gave up two goals in the final four minutes of the first half, including the gamewinner in added time of the first half.

The game was an even affair that saw the team's goalkeepers combine for 10 saves.  Quentin Westberg started for the U.S. in nets, but was replaced by Phil Marfuggi at halftime.

The two teams will face off once more on Friday (Jan. 31), before the U.S. team returns home.  The U.S. team is using this two-game trip to Costa Rica to prepare for March's journey to Guatemala for CONCACAF Group A qualifying.

In Guatemala the U.S. will face the hosts, Jamaica and El Salvador in a round-robin format.  The first place team in the group will qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Finland, and the group's second-place finisher will play-off with the CONCACAF Group B second-place team for the third and final CONCACAF world championship berth.
