Giants Cup Opponents For United and Crew Have Been Determined

CHICAGO (Tuesday, March 13, 2001) - The two opponents of D.C. United and the Columbus Crew in the second round of the inaugural FC Giants Cup have been identified after the opening round wrapped up yesterday.

United will face Arnett Gardens FC of Jamaica. The Jamaican club advanced with a 6-2 aggregate goals edge on SV Transvaal of Suriname. The preliminary series was tied at 1-1 after an opening game draw in Suriname. The return match was a rout, with Arnett Gardens posting an impressive 5-1 victory at home. Arnett Gardens and the Crew will play a two-game set beginning on April 3-5 and 10-12 in the Giants Cup quarterfinals.

Columbus will take on CD Saprissa of Costa Rica, who held a 5-1 edge after two matches against Alianza FC of El Salvador. The second match was a 0-0 draw, held in Costa Rica, as was the first match due to the earthquake damage in El Salvador. Attacker Rolando Fonseca, the all-time goal scoring leader among active Costa Rican internationals, leads Saprissa. United will face Saprissa in the Giants Cup quarterfinals on April 3-5 and 10-12.

The dates and times of the quarterfinal matches are yet to be determined. The two MLS clubs are currently slated to host the second legs in their respective quarterfinal series.
