Academy Alumni Caringi, Chavez Among Standouts at 2014 MLS Combine

More than 30 former U.S. Soccer Development Academy players spent the past week at the 2014 Major League Soccer Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. With their sights set on trying to impress for a professional move, many Academy alumni stood out during the six Combine games spread across a five-day stretch.

Former Real So Cal player Victor Chavez and Baltimore Bays SC alum Pete Caringi particularly had an impressive event as each had two goals during their three matches, including one tally against each other in the final match of the Combine on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, former IMG Academy player Marlon Hairston, who trained with the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team in 2013, scored the lone goal to help his team to a 1-0 victory.

On Sunday, Caringi scored his first goal off of an assist by former Minnesota Thunder Academy player Eric Miller, who represented the USA at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Also that day, Chavez and Lonestar SC product Kristopher Tyrpak exchanged goals in their match.

Also noteworthy from the Combine matches was former Colorado Rapids Academy player Zach Bolden, who scored the first goal of the 2014 MLS Combine last Friday.

Next on the agenda is the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, which will take place starting at 12 p.m. ET on Thursday, Jan. 16 (ESPNews).
