U.S. Tops Bahamas in Opening Match of CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (June 17, 2009) - The U.S. Beach Soccer Team gave up an early goal in their opening match of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship but came back behind three goals from Man of the Match, Anthony Chimienti, to post a 6-2 victory over the Bahamas.

The Bahamas, newcomers to the competition, proved to be stern competition for head coach Eddie Sot's men in the opening stages. The island nation scored an early opener, but the U.S. responded with four consecutive goals to take a commanding lead. Any hopes of a comeback were quashed when the Bahamas had an assistant coach and player sent off in the second period.

Sot was pleased with the performance but knows there is work yet to be done by saying, "It was a great win, but we have room for improvement. We weren't as sharp as I would like, but I'll take the three points."

The U.S. faces off against Costa Rica in their next match of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship on June 19 at the same venue. A win would qualify the U.S. for the semifinals and a shot at a spot in the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
