Early Goal Lifts Carmel United to Win Against FC Greater Boston

CARSON, Calif. (July 10, 2009) – A ninth minute goal from Michael Wignot held up as the game winner as Carmel United defeated FC Greater Boston on the first day of 2008-09 Development Academy Finals Week at The Home Depot Center.

In a back and forth match, neither team was able to break through to create many dangerous chances. For Carmel United, who took the U-15/16 title last year, all they needed was one chance. Utilizing his long throw in ability, James Vollmer lofted a ball to the near post where Wignot, a center back, had pushed forward. Timing his run perfectly to the near post, he headed it coolly past Ciaran Nugent and into the net.

Carmel had much of the possession in the early going, but FC Greater Boston took control of the latter part of the second half, creating chances through Scott Prozeller and Sam Kelley on the wings. Carmel United’s defense held strong though and allowed just one shot on goal in the first half.

In the second stanza, the two teams were evenly matched, battling through the midfield for the vast majority. The ferocious defenses of both sides held up as the teams combined for only 12 shots throughout the 90 minutes. The win give Carmel the top place in Group 1 of Finals Week. Next up for the Indiana-based club is a match up against the Dallas Texans on Sunday, July 12, at 4 p.m. PT. FC Greater Boston will take on IMG Academy at 3 p.m. PT the same day.
