U.S. Under-17 WNT Defeats Germany, 3-2, at Future Stars Tournament in New Zealand

Midfielder Kristin Mewis scored a dramatic 81st minute game-winner to give the U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team a 3-2 victory over Germany and the championship of the Future Stars tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.

"It was an exciting match where we met our equals and a match where we had to defend as well as attack,” said U.S. head coach Kazbek Tambi. “It was a great test in that we gave up an early goal and while we had a few good chances in the first half, we went into the locker room down 1-0. For me, it was great to see how the team would react and the fact that they came out of the locker room with a heightened intensity and sharpness and scored two goals was a good demonstration of character. Fatigue set in during the later part of the game and Germany got the equalizer, but it was nice to see how our team dug deep down to find a way to get the winning goal."

Both the USA and Germany had rolled past Australia and New Zealand, setting up the clash in the final match for both teams that would decide the title. A draw would have been good enough to win the tournament for the Americans and the Germans started fast, getting a goal from Tabea Kemme just 16 minutes into the game.

The USA went into halftime down a goal, but quickly tied it up after the re-start, getting a goal from Tani Costa two minutes into the second half. Midfielder Olivia Klei sent a cross in from the left wing which Costa collected the ball with her back to the goal. She spun around a Germany defender and struck her shot into the near post from six yards out.

The USA took the lead just five minutes later as Costa laid a pass back to Kristen Mewis inside the penalty area. She took a touch and then blasted the ball home from 10 yards out.

“Everything was going their way in the first half, and they were winning 50/50 balls,” said Mewis. “We were mad that they were being more aggressive, so we had to bear down and get back to our style of game. We played much better in the second half, had them on their heels and we were able to put some shots away.”

Still, the Germans tied the game in the 76th minute on a blast from outside by Valeria Kleiner and were fancying another. Five minutes later, though, Mewis bagged the winner on a direct free kick from just outside the penalty area right of the penalty arc, curving the ball around the wall and into the left corner for the victory.

“I’ve been practicing free kicks at practice with some of the other girls,” said Mewis, who led the team with five goals in the tournament. “We were using poles for the wall, and finally I got the chance to take one in a game. When the ball went in, everyone was really exited and overall, the tournament was a really good experience for the team. I think it will help us a lot as we continue to prepare for World Cup qualifying.”
