Three Academy Teams Clinch First Playoff Spots for 2013-14 Season

The U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs are a little more than two months away, and three clubs have clinched the first Playoff spots in this 2013-14 season.

The Players Development Academy U-17/18 team and the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake AZ U-15/16 sides have each qualified for the 2013-14 Academy Playoffs, which take place from June 23-27 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.

PDA has clinched an automatic Playoff bid and is guaranteed to rank in the top three in the Atlantic Division. PDA’s U-17/18s are 16-2-1 on the season at 2.58 points per game. This marks the fifth time in six seasons that PDA’s U-17/18s have qualified for the Academy Playoffs.

The LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake AZ U-15/16s are guaranteed a spot in the Playoffs as wild card teams at the moment and are still trying to lock up the top two spots in the Southwest Division. Through the April 12-13 weekend, Real Salt Lake AZ leads the division at 17-2-2 and 2.52 points per game. The LA Galaxy is second at 16-1-1 and 2.35 points per game.

The LA Galaxy U-15/16 age group won the national title during the 2010-11 season, capping off the campaign with a 4-1 win against PA Classics on July 16, 2011, in Milwaukee, Wis. Real Salt Lake AZ’s U-15/16s are the defending champions, defeating Solar Chelsea SC 4-2 in last year’s final on July 20, 2013, at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. Recent Real Salt Lake homegrown signing Justen Glad scored the game-winning goal in that match.
