Donovan Dazzled with 2007 Hat Trick Against Ecuador

The USA will be facing Ecuador for the 12th time this Friday at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.

Ecuador has had the better of the series, but in recent years the USA has had some success against the South American side.

Standing out among these games is Landon Donovan’s hat trick on March 25, 2007. Donovan led the USA to a 3-1 win against Ecuador at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Donovan tallied from just outside the box in the first minute with his left foot for the 1-0 lead. After Ecuador’s Felipe Caicedo equalized in the 11th minute, Donovan responded with two more in the 66th and 67th minutes, the latter a blast from 22 yards out into the upper left corner of the frame.

“Throughout this camp, you could tell that he had really stepped things up in terms of his role on the team,” former U.S. MNT head coach Bob Bradley said after that match. “He was our captain, and more than that, he really came through with the goals and good movement off the ball, which is something that he does really well.”
